A Material Bank event

In 2022, Material Bank launched a virtual sustainability CEU series based on curated firm-led presentations. In 2023, they brought this educational opportunity to Washington D.C., Atlanta, Memphis, and Houston and curated dynamic panel discussions with sustainability leaders across different professions within the A&D community – designers, architects, project managers, contractors, etc.

Now, it’s Kansas City’s turn!

This Material Bank program supports firms on their sustainable design journey. Material Bank has gathered design professionals from local firms for a presentation and panel discussion that will help you become an embodied carbon change maker!

This session will raise awareness to the incredible impact of reducing a building’s carbon footprint with responsible interior material selections and help guide future actions with more thoughtful consideration of the impact of embodied carbon within our interior spaces.

Rebecca Best

Rebecca has 20+ years’ experience developing and leading corporate sustainability and marketing strategies within different facets of the construction & design industry. She displays incredible passion in her efforts to integrate sustainability and CSR initiatives into strategic business decisions. Currently, as EVP at Material Bank, her focus leads Material Bank’s commitments to support climate action, as a part of responsible corporate governance. She develops strategies and programs to practically integrate sustainability into design tools. She is consistently driven to create intersections between ROI and sustainability and to uncover new opportunities to bring decarbonization tactics and education directly into construction & design project workflow.

Sara Greenwood, LEED-AP BD+C, LEED Fellow +WELL AP WELL Faculty + GGF

Ms. Greenwood is a sustainability consultant with over 18 years of experience. Her expertise and insight into emerging green building practices and technologies provide a unique perspective for clients pursuing green building certification and sustainable business initiatives.
Ms. Greenwood has managed the green building certification for over 57 million square feet of space. Project experience ranges in building types such as public assembly, multifamily residential, commercial offices, retail, aviation, hospitality, K-12, higher education facilities, healthcare, logistics parks, and government buildings. She has supported the US Green Building Council to inform updates to the last two versions of the LEED rating system, participated on the LEED Steering Committee, LEED Advisory Committee, and served as one of a few LEED project reviewers for GBCI. She also serves on the WELL Advisory Committee and is WELL Faculty. She has strong experience in several green building rating systems and has helped to inform updates to codes and standards in California and nationally. She is passionate about improving the health and lifestyle of building occupants and supporting developers to achieve their performance goals. Sara has presented on green and healthy building topics to professionals nationwide.

Ashley is a LEED, Green Globes, and WELL accredited professional who serves as Hoefer Welker’s sustainability director. Continually raising the bar with performance-driven sustainable, and resilient design, Ashley is committed to supporting her client’s sustainability and certification goals. She doesn’t think that sustainability strategies are a one size fits all and helps steer clients to those that fit their unique needs. As a thought leader in the sustainability community, Ashley has been selected for national speaking engagements and is on advisory boards for USGBC and GBI. Locally she is a part of the Climate Environmental Council with Climate Action Kansas City, a group of diverse subject matter experts that are working together to better their city through policy, leadership, and action.

With a mission to elevate both professional and personal environments, Lauren is dedicated to uniting people, enhancing life's aesthetic, and unraveling the intricate patterns of our earthly experiences, one moment at a time.

Joyce Raybuck, AIA, LEED® AP

Joyce Raybuck, AIA, LEED AP is a Principal at BNIM. A passionate and collaborative design leader, she produces thoughtful, human-centered projects from concept through construction. With nearly 20 years in the profession, her background includes national and international experience leading projects in higher education, embassy design, workplace and urban development.

Alongside her design leadership, Joyce is a co-leader of BNIM’s Sustainability Group. She has championed firm efforts in implementing BNIM’s 2020 Sustainability Action Plan and annual sustainability report, Subject To Change. Joyce currently serves on the National AIA Committee on the Environment Leadership Group.

Erika Winters-Downey, S.E., LEED AP BD+C

Lamar Johnson Collaborative

Erika Winters-Downey, SE, LEED AP BD+C, is an Associate Principal with Lamar Johnson Collaborative (LJC), a full-service, architecture and design firm and integrated subsidiary of Clayco, a national design-build construction firm. Erika serves as Director of Sustainable Structures for LJC’s in-house Technical Assurance Group (TAG), and in this role supports all the integrated Clayco companies.

Erika has worked for more than two decades in the AEC industry, learning and leading sustainability best practices in structural design and construction. Supported by her experience working directly with national industry-based organizations, including over ten years in the structural steel industry, Erika now leads embodied carbon reduction strategies for all of the Clayco integrated companies. Since joining the Clayco companies, Erika has established embodied carbon study prototypes and piloted the low-carbon concrete design testing program.

Erika currently serves as Board Chair for the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Central Plains chapter and participates as a member of the inaugural Board of the Kansas City Building Energy Exchange.
