From Sketch to Storybook

A Studio Visit with Charlie Mylie

Have you ever wondered how a picture book goes from simple sketch to the beautifully illustrated story you hold in your hands? Join us for a special visit to the historic residence and studio of Charlie Mylie. A local Picture Book Author and Illustrator, Charlie has written and illustrated several children’s books: Brain TrainMerry MittensHello Day, and more. Each of these stories are brought to life by his remarkable talent and unique artistic style.

Step into a world where stories quite literally live at home. The Miller Residence, remarkably designed by renowned architect Louis Curtiss (circa 1920-21), is where Charlie and his family call home. Located in the Historic Westheight neighborhood, the home features clean lines and geometric forms that define the International Style. The interior boasts stunning details, including a gold leaf dome ceiling, hand stenciled woodwork, brick archways, and original light fixtures. During this KC Design Week event, Charlie will share his creative process while attendees have the unique opportunity to experience the space his work is rooted in. Place and process are intertwined to spark his stories that delight so many young readers.

Artists, storytellers, designers, and anyone curious about the dynamic and depth of Charlie’s work – come ready to peek behind the pages to explore his creative process, experience the space where his iconic illustrations are developed, and hear how a sketch can spark a whole world.

Charlie Mylie

Charlie Mylie is an author and illustrator of several children's books. He used to draw on-the-spot watercolors as Pop Up Charlie, and contributed to envisioning the Rabbit hOle.
